Move water away
The general grading rule calls for at least a 6-inch fall over the first 10 feet away from foundation walls.
Where physical barriers prevent that fall, use drains or swales. Impervious surfaces within 10 feet need at least a 2% slope away.
Do not borrow solid-lumber limits
Engineered members have a different alteration rule: cuts, notches, and holes require manufacturer permission or specific design consideration by a registered design professional.
Identify whether the member is an I-joist, truss, or other listed engineered product before treating an opening as acceptable.
